Artful Machine Quilting You Really Can Do
Reviewed by Sophie Littlefield Kathy Sandbach enjoys a growing reputation in the quilting world as a pioneer of creative machine quilting. In her new book, Kathy proposes to teach any quilter, no matter how "un-artistic," to create original quilting designs to complement and enhance any pieced top. Show Me How To Create Quilting Designs features six simple projects and 70 continuous-line quilting designs that you can use in your own work. Most importantly, Kathy guides you through each step of creating your own unique designs. Experiment, Please Kathy begins with a discussion of supplies and techniques, but this is not a complete primer on machine quilting and should not be your first book on the subject. Kathy's designs are inspired by many sources, including printed fabrics. Study her examples to learn how to select motifs from your own fabric. You could easily work through the book by trying each design on muslin scraps. Or if you prefer, dive right into one of the six sumptuous, contemporary wall hanging projects. They're easy to piece, with lots of open areas for machine quilting, so you can experiment without worry. Don't Stress, Play! Kathy's process is very forgiving. I recently used her techniques to cover a large quilt with daisies and vines in hot-pink thread, and while I began with considerable trepidation, I was thrilled with the results. The key is to relax and remember your quilting time is, above all, meant to be enjoyed. Kathy sums it up perfectly: "Your designs are not going into a museum, so don't reach for perfection. Just play!" Where To Buy This Book
