ASK AN EXPERT

How do I re-draw a 12-inch block at 10 inches?

A reader isn't happy with the size of her pattern. Patricia and Donna point her to resources that will help her fix the problem.

Answered by Patricia Magaret and Donna Slusser

What is the best way to re-size block patterns? I want to turn a 12-inch block pattern into a 10-inch pattern.

- A Quilter's Review reader

Patricia Magaret and Donna Slusser respond:

It is important for us all to be able to draft blocks to the size we need for any particular project!

First, you need to decide what grid system was used to draw the original block. Is it a 4-patch? A 5-patch? A 7-patch? An 8-pointed star grid? And so on.

Once you have determined that, it is often relatively easy to convert the block to a different size using graph paper.

If, however, you have a block that will not convert easily, you can also use quilt design software on your computer for an easy fix. Most programs have this capability.

If you don't have quilt design software, then Joen Wolfrom's Make Any Block Any Size is a wonderful book for all of us quiltmakers who want to be good drafters as well. Joen shows a valuable drafting technique that will let you take control of your project. Her book is a must for every quilting library.
