What is fussy cutting?

Fussy cutting is the selective cutting of fabric based on the fabric’s pattern or design.

For example, if you have a one-yard piece of fabric but only want to use the pattern in a certain portion of the fabric, cutting just that portion of the design away from the remaining fabric is called “fussy cutting.”

The fussiest kind of fussy cutting, in which you cut out individual motifs, is an essential part of the Broderie Perse technique. You can learn more about that technique here.
